What are genital warts?
Genital warts – also known as condylomas or venereal warts – are benign but contagious skin changes in the intimate area, such as on the penis, vulva, anus, and perineum. They are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).
Warts often appear as small, soft bumps or flat growths – sometimes alone, sometimes in groups. Many people notice them by chance during washing or shaving.
Even though they are usually harmless, they can spread and cause discomfort or pain during sex.
A medical exam is recommended if you …
- have noticed small bumps, warts or changes in the skin in your genital area
- are unsure whether the changes are harmless or contagious
- have had intimate contact and wonder if you might have caught HPV
- notice itching, burning or irritation during sex
- were previously treated for an HPV infection and want a dermatological check-up

What happens during the examination and treatment of genital warts?
The first step is an open conversation about what you’ve observed or any symptoms. After that, the dermatologist will check the affected area. Usually, a quick look is enough – genital warts have a very typical appearance.
If needed, we take a swab to confirm an HPV infection in the lab. The procedure is quick, gentle, and discreet.
What does treatment for genital warts involve?
Treatment can usually start right away – for example, by gently removing the warts, freezing (cryotherapy), laser therapy, or using a medical cream. Which method is best depends on your individual case and preferences.
We will also inform you clearly and respectfully about next steps, possible recurrence, and whether it makes sense to treat your partner as well.
How does treatment for genital warts work?
Initial consultation
We start by speaking with you about your symptoms, any concerns, and questions. Everything you share with us is strictly confidential.
Examination
The dermatologist examines the affected area – often, a quick look is enough for diagnosis. You are welcome to bring someone with you if you prefer. If necessary, we will take a swab sample.
Start of treatment
If genital warts are found, treatment can usually begin right away – for example, using removal, freezing, or a prescribed cream.
Pain sensation
Most people tolerate the treatment well. If you’re sensitive, local anesthesia can be used.
Follow-up and progress
We usually recommend a follow-up after about 4 weeks, as genital warts can sometimes come back.

What to expect from us
Evaluation & treatment in one visit
If you have a typical case, we can start treatment right away – whether with laser, freezing, or a medical cream.
Treatment tailored to your skin
No one method works for every skin area. We use different techniques to remove genital warts (laser, cryotherapy, removal, medical treatment) and choose what suits you best.
Partners can be treated too
Because genital warts are contagious, it’s helpful to include your partner in treatment – we make this easy to do.
Everything under one roof
You receive diagnosis, medical treatment, and cosmetic support in one place. This means clear contact persons, short distances, and coordinated care from first appointment to follow-up.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Genital Warts
What are genital warts (condylomas)?
Genital warts – also called condylomata acuminata – are benign skin changes caused by HPV (human papillomavirus). They usually appear as small, soft bumps or reddish-brown growths that may be flat or cauliflower-shaped.
How can I recognize genital warts?
Typical signs include:
- small growths in the genital area (penis, vulva, anus, perineum)
- often soft, skin-colored or slightly red
- single or in clusters
- rarely itchy or painful
A doctor can make a clear diagnosis.
Are genital warts contagious?
Yes – genital warts are transmitted via certain types of HPV. Infection usually occurs during sex or close skin contact. Transmission is possible even without visible symptoms.
How are genital warts treated?
Treatment options depend on the severity: topical creams or solutions, freezing (cryotherapy), laser therapy, or surgical removal. The right method depends on your case and needs.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on size, number, and the method used. Often, multiple sessions are needed. Treatment may take weeks, especially if warts return.
Can genital warts go away on their own?
Yes, in some cases they go away without treatment – especially if your immune system is strong. Still, it’s important to get checked to prevent spreading or reinfection.
How can I protect myself from genital warts?
Condoms reduce the risk but don’t offer full protection. The HPV vaccine protects reliably against the most common virus types – it’s recommended before becoming sexually active.
What is the difference between genital warts and herpes?
Genital warts are usually painless skin growths caused by HPV. Genital herpes, caused by the herpes simplex virus, leads to painful blisters and redness. A doctor can tell the difference.
When should I see a doctor for genital warts?
Always – any new skin changes in the genital area should be checked by a dermatologist or gynecologist. Early diagnosis helps prevent spread and transmission.
