What is chickenpox?
Chickenpox – medically called varicella – is a highly contagious viral infection that occurs mostly in childhood, but can also affect adults. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus – the same virus that can later cause shingles.
Typical signs include fever, general fatigue, and a very itchy rash with red spots and blisters that usually starts on the torso and face and then spreads across the body.
The infection usually clears up on its own, but in adults or people with weakened immune systems it can be much more severe.
During pregnancy, a chickenpox infection can be dangerous for both the mother and unborn baby. Quick medical evaluation is strongly recommended.
A medical evaluation is especially important if …
- your child develops a sudden fever followed by an itchy skin rash with blisters
- you as an adult notice typical symptoms, since the illness can be much more severe in adults
- there’s uncertainty whether it’s really chickenpox or another viral skin condition
- you or your child have risk factors, such as eczema or a weakened immune system
- you are pregnant and not sure if you have had chickenpox or are well protected

What happens during diagnosis and treatment of chickenpox?
At Derma Medical Clinic, our dermatologists can usually recognize chickenpox based on the typical appearance of the rash. A physical exam is often enough.
If the rash is unusual or very pronounced, we may take a sample or do a lab test to identify the virus precisely.
What happens during treatment of chickenpox?
The goal is to relieve symptoms. Depending on your needs, we may combine the following steps:
- medicines to ease symptoms such as itching, fever, and pain
- lotions to reduce itching or soothing baths to care for the skin
- for adults, immunocompromised individuals, or severe cases: antiviral tablets
In all cases, you or your child will receive personalized support with clear advice on skin care, hygiene, and how to avoid infecting others.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Chickenpox (Varicella)
What is chickenpox?
Chickenpox – medically called varicella – is a highly contagious viral infection, usually occurring in childhood, but also affecting adults. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
How can I recognize chickenpox?
A typical sign is an itchy skin rash with red spots and small blisters, often with fever and tiredness. The rash usually starts on the torso and spreads all over the body.
Is chickenpox contagious?
Yes, you can spread the virus 1–2 days before the rash appears and until the blisters crust over. It spreads through droplets or direct skin contact.
How long does chickenpox last?
The illness usually heals within 7–10 days. In adults or those with weaker immune systems, it may last longer and be more severe.
What helps with chickenpox?
Depending on the case, treatment includes fever-reducing medicine, itch-relieving skincare, and for high-risk patients, antiviral medication. Rest, good skin care, and hygiene also help prevent bacterial infections.
When should I see a doctor for chickenpox?
If there’s severe itching, high fever, uncertainty about the rash, or if an adult is affected. Also important if you’ve been in contact with pregnant women, newborns, or people with weakened immune systems.
Can I get chickenpox twice?
No, once you’ve had chickenpox you’re immune for life. But the virus stays in the body and can return later as shingles (herpes zoster).
What to do if I have chickenpox during pregnancy?
Please seek medical advice right away. A chickenpox infection during pregnancy can harm the unborn baby. We’ll give you expert help immediately, according to the latest guidelines.
