The CO2 laser affects the structure, elasticity, and quality of the skin. Skin changes can be treated effectively and gently at the same time. The laser stimulates collagen production and skin renewal; skin quality is sustainably improved.
At the Derma Medical Clinic, we use the CO2 laser to treat acne scars, scars, pigmentation disorders, wrinkles, and drooping eyelids (lower eyelid tightening). This requires a specialist assessment of the skin condition and the expected result.

CO2 Laser - At a Glance
What is the CO2 laser?
The CO2 laser uses light energy. This affects the water content of the skin (water evaporates in a controlled manner). In this way, skin layers can be removed very finely. In addition, skin renewal is stimulated.
In the area of the lower eyelids, skin tightening without a scalpel is possible depending on the findings.
Compared to older laser procedures, the treatment can be controlled more precisely and the surrounding tissue is protected. The healing and recovery phase is usually faster.
A treatment is always useful if you want to improve your skin quality or have an area treated specifically. For example:
- for acne scars, scars, and structural skin changes
- for pigmentation disorders or UV-induced skin damage
- for wrinkles, including in the lower eyelid area
- if you want a holistic improvement of skin structure and skin surface

What Happens During the Examination?
We assess your skin and clarify with which laser intensity we can achieve the best possible result. This includes:
- Detailed analysis of the skin
- Assessing the skin changes
- Estimating the regeneration time (downtime / healing)
- Planning: superficial or more intensive laser treatment
What happens during the treatment?
The skin areas to be treated are prepared and locally anesthetized if necessary. The treatment lasts between a few minutes and an hour.
- Redness and a feeling of warmth are possible immediately after application
- Crusting may occur after a few days
- Depending on the intensity, the regeneration phase can take several weeks; several sessions at intervals are often recommended
How does the treatment work?
Initial consultation and diagnosis
We assess the skin condition and the indication for the CO₂ laser. We also clarify whether alternatives or combinations make more sense.
Individual therapy planning
We discuss the treatment areas and the number of sessions based on skin type, findings, pigmentation, and your desired result.
Treatment and support
The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia if required. We will inform you about the appropriate skin care.
Control and adjustment
Check-ups are useful after some time. Depending on the findings, we may need several sessions and, if necessary, an adjustment of the laser strength.

Our team of specialists in Zurich is very experienced in laser medicine and will advise you comprehensively on which effects are realistic and whether treatment alternatives make sense.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the CO2 Laser
When do you advise against treatment with the CO2 laser?
Not every skin reacts the same. In the case of very dark skin, active skin inflammations, or certain pre-existing conditions and impaired wound healing, we may advise against treatment. The same applies to unrealistic expectations of the treatment result. We also take alternatives or combination treatments into account in the consultation in Zurich.
Is the CO2 laser suitable for treatment in the area of the lower eyelids?
This laser technology is very gentle on the tissue and can improve the skin structure overall. The tissue becomes firmer, tighter, and small wrinkles can be smoothed out if necessary. Depending on the findings, we also treat the rather sensitive area of the lower eyelids with the CO2 laser.
What downtime do I have to expect after a CO2 laser treatment?
The downtime and the extent of the side effects depend on the strength of the treatment. After more intensive treatments, healing can take several days to weeks. Redness, crusting, and scaling are part of the desired regeneration process.
How many sessions are necessary?
Sometimes a single session is enough. In the case of scars, sagging skin, wrinkles, or pronounced skin problems, further sessions may be useful. We will discuss the appropriate number with you individually, depending on the results of your skin analysis and the desired treatment results.
When will I see the result of the laser treatment?
The skin needs some time to rebuild itself. Therefore, initial improvements appear after about three to four weeks. Overall, the skin needs several weeks to months for collagen production and the associated skin development. A consequence of the increased collagen production is firmer, plumper, and smoother skin.
