10 questions for Ploon Hellendorn, BSc

Do you remember when you first thought: “I want to become a skin therapist”?

I actually knew early on that I wanted to work in healthcare—it runs in my family. When I then happened to come across the profession of skin therapist, I was immediately curious. After attending an open day, it was clear to me: that’s it! Because of my own experience with atopic dermatitis (eczema) and pigmentation issues, I’d always had a special interest in skin and dermatology—and that’s what convinced me.

What fascinated you about your field from the start—and what still excites you today?

From the beginning, I was fascinated by the depth of dermatology, especially how closely the skin is connected with the whole body and its processes. I was also inspired by the fact that skin therapy is based on evidence-based practice: the treatments we provide are scientifically grounded. To this day, I find it impressive how, with the right methods, we can achieve visible and lasting results.

What feedback from patients has particularly moved you recently?

I’m especially moved when patients tell me they’re happy with the visible results and feel truly understood. They also appreciate that I take time for their history and concerns and support them personally. Hearing that my individual approach made the decisive difference motivates me every single time.

What would you like to impart to people who come to your practice—beyond diagnoses and treatments?

It’s important to me that people feel they’re not alone with their skin concerns. I want to give them reassurance and orientation—not only through treatment, but also by strengthening confidence and self-belief. My goal is for them to understand their skin better and handle it with confidence.

How would you explain your work to a friend with no medical background?

I help people with skin problems. Just as a physiotherapist supports muscles and joints, I take care of the skin. Whether acne, scarring, or other skin concerns—I find the right treatment and guide my patients. I work in an evidence-based way, with modern devices such as lasers, and I help them understand their skin and care for it properly in everyday life.

What is especially important to you in dealing with patients?

Trust—and ensuring that patients truly understand their own skin issues. I want them to grasp why we use certain treatments or recommend a home care routine. I’m happy to take the time to explain everything.

What does a really good workday look like for you?

A good day for me has variety—for example, different laser treatments and follow-up appointments where we see great results. What I love most is when patients go home feeling good in their skin.

Is there a patient story you will never forget? Why?

I could tell many stories that have moved me—but those remain between me and my patients. What I never forget are the moments when someone feels: “I finally feel better; I feel comfortable in my own skin again.” Those moments carry me through my work.

What do you and your team laugh about—even when things get stressful?

Mostly about ourselves… little mishaps, inside jokes, or just the crazy moments of everyday life. Humor simply belongs to it.

What does good medical care mean to you—personally?

For me, good medical care means patients can trust in treatment that is scientifically sound, individually tailored, and carried out responsibly.
