What is light therapy?
By light therapy, we mean the medical use of light in the treatment of skin diseases. Depending on the wavelength and dosage, the light has an anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, soothing, or sebum-regulating effect.
In dermatology, we use light therapy particularly when local therapies such as ointments are insufficient or when systemic treatment is not advisable.
Light treatment is skin-friendly and useful for certain skin problems:
- Psoriasis
- Neurodermatitis or chronic eczema
- Inflammatory acne
- Chronic pruritus (itching)
- When systemic therapy should be avoided

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Light Therapy
Which skin conditions can be treated with light therapy?
We use light therapy (light in different wavelengths) primarily for inflammatory and chronic skin conditions. For example, for psoriasis, neurodermatitis, acne, or certain types of eczema. It is also used for chronic itching (where the cause is also decisive) or light-dependent dermatoses. We decide together whether light therapy is appropriate during your examination at the Derma Medical Clinic.
Is light therapy harmful to the skin?
When used in a controlled manner, light therapy is very well tolerated. The wavelengths and dosages used are precisely matched to the skin type and condition in our Zurich clinic.
How many sessions are necessary?
The number of sessions depends on the cause of the skin problems, the current status, and the individual response of the skin to the UV rays. As a rule, we recommend several sessions at regular intervals. The therapy plan is adjusted regularly.
Can light therapy be combined with other treatments?
The individual case is always decisive. Depending on the cause of the skin problems, combinations with medication or other approaches may be useful.
Is light therapy also possible for sensitive skin?
The intensity of UV rays can be well regulated and is therefore usually possible even for sensitive skin. Before starting, we always determine your skin type and assess photosensitivity and possible contraindications.
