When light therapy is used effectively

Light therapy is used for various skin conditions, especially when inflammation plays a central role. For chronic conditions such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, but also for acne or certain types of eczema.
The individual skin condition is decisive. Not every skin reacts the same way to light. A thorough dermatological diagnosis is the prerequisite for deciding whether and which form of light therapy is appropriate.

How Light Therapy Works on the Skin

Light directly influences processes within the skin. Certain wavelengths have anti-inflammatory effects, regulate the immune system, or control sebum production.
This allows for targeted improvement of symptoms such as redness, scaling, or itching. Simultaneously, the treatment supports skin regeneration and stabilizes impaired skin functions.
The primary effect depends on the specific form of light used and the individual condition of the skin.

Considerations Before Starting Light Therapy

Before treatment, we assess how your skin reacts to light and whether there are factors that might influence the therapy. Skin type, current medications, pre-existing conditions, and individual light sensitivity all play a role, as does the location of the skin changes. Not every body region reacts the same way, and there are various forms of light therapy. The goal is to achieve maximum effectiveness while avoiding side effects.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Light Therapy

Which skin conditions can be treated with light therapy?

We use light therapy (light in different wavelengths) primarily for inflammatory and chronic skin conditions. For example, for psoriasis, neurodermatitis, acne, or certain types of eczema. It is also used for chronic itching (where the cause is also decisive) or light-dependent dermatoses. We decide together whether light therapy is appropriate during your examination at the Derma Medical Clinic.

Is light therapy harmful to the skin?

When applied in a controlled manner, light therapy is very well tolerated. The wavelengths and dosages used are precisely matched to the skin type and condition in our Zurich clinic.

How many sessions are necessary?

The number of sessions depends on the cause of the skin problems, the current status, and the individual response of the skin to the UV rays. As a rule, we recommend several sessions at regular intervals. The therapy plan is adjusted regularly.

Can light therapy be combined with other treatments?

The individual case is always decisive. Depending on the cause of the skin problems, combinations with medication or other approaches may be useful.

Is light therapy also possible for sensitive skin?

The intensity of UV rays can be well regulated and is therefore usually possible even for sensitive skin. Before starting, we always determine your skin type and assess photosensitivity and possible contraindications.
