What is a mole?
A mole – also known as a skin spot – is a benign cluster of cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin. These spots can appear brown, black, or skin-colored.
Most moles and spots are harmless. However, some change in size, shape, or color and can be a sign of skin cancer.
That’s why moles play a key role in the early detection of skin cancer, especially because malignant skin cancer often develops from existing moles.
A mole check is important if you…
- have many or unusual moles or skin spots that change in shape, color, size or surface
- had frequent sunburns in the past
- have a family history of skin cancer
- notice a mole or skin spot that itches, bleeds or feels irregular
Even if you don’t have any risk factors, we recommend regular checks to detect skin cancer early – especially from the age of 35.

What happens during a mole check?
During your skin examination at Derma Medical Clinic, your skin will be carefully checked using a special magnifying tool (called a dermatoscope). This allows us to see details that are not visible to the naked eye.
Concerning moles or skin spots will also be photographed using a high-resolution camera (Fotofinder Full-Body Mapping), so we can document and track any changes over time.
A computer-based analysis supported by artificial intelligence helps us evaluate even subtle changes reliably. Thanks to this high-resolution photo documentation, we can precisely monitor changes over time by comparing with previous images.
What happens if something looks suspicious?
If a mole seems suspicious — for example, it’s asymmetrical, has irregular edges, shows multiple colors, or has grown — we can take a small tissue sample (biopsy) right away on site.
The sample will be sent to a specialized lab and analyzed within a few days.
If a mole needs to be removed, the procedure is carried out directly in our own certified operating room.
How does the mole check work?

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Mole Checks
What is the difference between a mole and a skin spot?
There is no medical difference – mole and skin spot refer to the same type of skin change. Both terms describe mostly harmless clusters of pigment cells that appear as dark spots on the skin. The medical term is “nevus” (plural: nevi). In everyday language, skin spot is more common in German, while mole is often used in preventive care.
What exactly happens during a mole check at the dermatologist?
During a mole check, the dermatologist examines your entire skin from head to toe for suspicious moles.
A special magnifier (dermatoscope) and, if needed, a digital full-body scan (Fotofinder Full-Body Mapping) are used. Suspicious moles can be documented immediately or examined further.
How often should you get your moles checked?
As a general rule, a mole check is recommended once a year. For those with risk factors – such as light skin tone, family history, or many moles – more frequent checkups may be helpful.
What are signs of a suspicious mole?
Suspicious moles may change in shape, color, size, or symmetry. Warning signs include uneven edges, dark color changes, rapid growth, itching, or bleeding.
Can I have a mole check during pregnancy?
Yes, mole checks can be safely done during pregnancy – and are often recommended.
Hormonal changes can affect moles. Regular skin cancer screenings are an added safety measure.
What is a digital mole check?
In a digital mole check, moles are photographed in high resolution and analyzed using computer tools. This method allows for better assessment and long-term comparison of changes – helping with early skin cancer detection.
What happens if a suspicious mole is found?
At our clinic, we can immediately investigate or treat suspicious skin changes – everything is done on site and without needing to go elsewhere.
