How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser detects the pigment (melanin) in the hair root. The light energy only works when there is enough pigment present, so light, gray, or red hair is not suitable.
Before your treatment:
To allow the laser to work properly, your skin must be freshly shaved before your appointment, ideally 24 hours beforehand. Please do not wax, epilate, or pluck, as this removes the hair root – which is the target of the treatment.
Hair that hasn’t been shaved may also increase the risk of skin irritation or mild burns.
This treatment may be a good option if you …
- are tired of dealing with stubble, razor burn, or ingrown hairs
- find your body hair bothersome or unpleasant, especially during sports, daily life, or in warmer months
- want smooth skin without constantly shaving, waxing, or epilating
- have sensitive skin that gets irritated by regular hair removal methods
- wish for a permanent reduction in hair, performed gently, professionally, and under medical supervision

What Happens During Laser Hair Removal?
First, we do a cosmetic skin assessment: we analyze your skin type, moles, and hair, and decide together which areas you want to treat. Then the laser treatment begins.
The advanced laser system sends controlled pulses of light into the skin to gently heat the hair root without harming the surrounding skin. This disables the hair during its growth phase.
At Derma Medical Clinic, we use the latest laser technology:
The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is one of the most powerful medical laser systems available and is approved for use only in medical settings.
What this means for you: treatment with a precise and powerful laser, monitored by dermatologists – also suitable for sensitive skin.
How many sessions are needed?
Since the laser only targets active hair roots, several sessions are needed – typically 4 to 8 treatments spaced a few weeks apart. The exact plan depends on the area, hair density, and your hair growth cycle.
What to expect:
- With each session, the hair becomes finer and grows back more slowly
- Complete hair removal can’t be guaranteed, but significant, long-lasting hair reduction is very effective on dark hair
- Your skin stays smoother and more refined without daily shaving
What Does the Laser Hair Removal Process Look Like?
First consultation & assessment
The dermatologist first examines your skin and hair type. Our skin therapist will check whether laser treatment is suitable for you (for example, if you have dark body hair).
Preparing your skin
Important: The area to be treated must be freshly shaved (ideally 24 hours before the appointment). Please do not wax, epilate, or pluck, as these methods remove the hair root that the laser targets.
Laser treatment
The laser energy targets the hair roots and gently disables them. Most people feel only a slight warmth or tingling. The treatment is usually well tolerated and not painful.
Aftercare
After the treatment, you may experience mild redness or a warm feeling, similar to a mild sunburn. We will give you instructions on how to care for your skin afterwards.

Hair removal is carried out in our clinic by a specialized skin therapist, in close coordination with our experienced dermatologists. This ensures that every treatment is not only cosmetically effective but also medically appropriate.
All three professionals have many years of experience in aesthetic dermatology and collaborate closely – combining expertise and a sense for natural results tailored to your needs.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses focused light energy directed at the hair root. The pigment in the root absorbs the light, heat is created, and the hair root is weakened – without damaging the surrounding skin.
What is the difference between laser and IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broad-spectrum light technique often used in beauty salons. A medical laser, however, uses a single, very focused wavelength – making it more precise, stronger, and able to penetrate deeper into the skin.
This means:
- The laser targets the hair root more effectively
- Fewer sessions are usually needed
- The method works better for thick or deep dark hairs
IPL may be less effective on very light hair or dark skin – in such cases, a laser is usually safer and works better.
What does a skin therapist do, and how is that different from a beautician?
A skin therapist is trained to help care for skin concerns like acne, rosacea, or pigmentation problems. Unlike a traditional beautician, they work closely with dermatologists and use advanced methods and medical-grade ingredients. At Derma Medical Clinic, every treatment is done by a qualified skin therapist, tailored to your skin type and condition.
Who is laser hair removal suitable for?
The treatment works especially well for dark body hair. Thanks to advanced laser technology, it can also be used on darker skin types. We will provide an individual assessment during your consultation.
Which parts of the body can be treated with laser?
Typical areas include:
- Face (e.g. upper lip, chin)
- Underarms
- Legs and arms
- Bikini and intimate area
- Back and chest
It can also be helpful if you suffer from ingrown hairs or razor burn.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Most people find the treatment very tolerable. Depending on the area, you may feel a slight snap or warmth, like a rubber band. An integrated cooling system adds comfort.
How many sessions are needed?
Because not all hair grows at the same time, multiple sessions are needed – usually 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. This way, all active hair roots can be treated over time.
How long does the effect of laser hair removal last?
Dark hair responds well to laser and shows lasting reduction. A few fine hairs may return over time – follow-up sessions can be done if needed.
What should I do before the laser treatment?
The skin should be freshly shaved on the day of treatment. Do not wax, epilate, or pluck. Avoid strong sun, tanning beds, or self-tanners in the days before your session.
What should I know after laser hair removal?
Your skin may be sensitive after treatment. Please avoid for several days:
- Sun and tanning beds
- Sauna and sports
- Peels or irritating skincare
We recommend using soothing products and strong sun protection.
