When fine vessels become visible

Spider veins usually develop gradually. At first, only individual small veins are visible; over time, larger networks of vessels can form. Many people find the visible vessels aesthetically bothersome and avoid wearing short clothing. Before any treatment, a specialist should clarify whether the spider veins occur in isolation or are related to venous insufficiency.

Why spider veins develop

Spider veins develop as a result of dilation of the smallest superficial veins. The causes are varied and range from genetic factors and hormonal influences to changes in the venous system. Prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, and a family predisposition can also promote their development. Spider veins often occur together with varicose veins. A vascular medicine examination is part of the diagnostic work-up in Zurich.

CLaCS method: Gentle varicose vein treatment for beautiful legs

Concept
A gentle outpatient procedure of around 15–20 minutes can deliver quick, attractive results even for larger, protruding veins. CLaCS (cryo-laser and cryo-sclerotherapy) combines laser technology with pinpoint sclerotherapy.

Treatment course
First, a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser visibly reduces the superficial varicosity. This is followed by sclerotherapy, supported by a Vein Viewer and an LED vein finder to visualise the finest vessels.

Result
Treated veins are noticeably reduced immediately; the final result becomes visible after 6–8 weeks. Follow-up sessions may be useful for larger areas.

Why CLaCS?
For vessels over 1.5 mm in diameter, classic sclerotherapy carries a risk of bothersome, long-lasting brown discolouration—CLaCS minimises this risk.

Treating spider veins

When is treatment appropriate?

Treatment is advisable if the visible vessels are cosmetically bothersome or if there is suspicion of an underlying venous condition. Before any therapy, it is recommended to clarify whether there are larger venous changes that should be treated first.

Which therapeutic approach is used?

The most common treatment is sclerotherapy. A special sclerosing agent is injected into the affected vessels. As a result, the vessel walls stick together—the vessels are metabolised by the body and thus broken down. For very fine or certain superficial vessels, laser procedures can also be used, sometimes in combination with CLaCS. Which method is suitable depends on factors such as extent, location, and vessel diameter.

What happens during the treatment?

After the examination, we decide on the appropriate therapy. For sclerotherapy, we inject the preparation into the affected vessels. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. Several sessions may be required.

Why have spider veins treated by us?

Specialist assessment of spider veins

Not every visible vein is purely a cosmetic issue. We carefully check whether there are additional venous changes.

Experienced Doctors

At Derma Medical Clinic, the examination is carried out by experienced specialists in vascular medicine with expertise in diagnosing and treating venous diseases.

Modern diagnostics

We combine the clinical examination with a detailed analysis of the venous system.

Individual Consultation

You will receive a well-founded assessment of the findings, treatment options, side effects, and the results you can expect.

Procedure

Initial consultation & assessment

In the initial consultation, we record your symptoms and previous conditions and examine the affected areas carefully. If you wish, we also offer a separate consultation appointment.

Treatment plan

As part of the vein clinic, we determine which therapy is suitable for you and whether further examinations are necessary.

Treatment

Sclerotherapy or laser treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in Zurich and is tailored individually to the vascular changes. During laser treatment, the affected vessels are selectively sealed. As a rule, two sessions are planned.

Aftercare

After treatment, compression stockings may be used for isolated sclerotherapy—this supports success and helps prevent new small veins. The treated areas fade gradually. We check the treatment outcome on site. Depending on the findings, skin type, and course, further treatments may be advisable.

“With spider veins, a well-founded assessment is necessary so that possible venous causes are not overlooked.”

Dr. med. Andreas Gutwein is responsible for the assessment and treatment of vascular diseases in our vascular centre; as a specialist in angiolog y and general internal medicine as well as phlebology, he is a specialist in this field and has many years of experience in diagnosing and treating lipoedema.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about treating spider veins

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are dilated veins directly beneath the surface of the skin. They appear as reddish, bluish, or violet vessel patterns and occur mainly on the legs.

Are spider veins dangerous?

In most cases, spider veins are harmless. However, they can indicate underlying venous insufficiency or varicose vein disease. That is why a vascular medicine examination by a specialist is recommended before treatment.

What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

Spider veins affect very small, superficial vessels. Varicose veins are significantly larger veins that are dilated and often tortuous. Both changes can occur independently, but they often occur together.

Why do spider veins develop?

The causes are varied. A family predisposition can play a role, as can hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, and weakness of the venous system.

Can spider veins disappear on their own?

As a rule, spider veins persist. Without appropriate treatment, they usually do not recede. Over time, additional vessels may appear.

How are spider veins examined?

First, a clinical examination of the legs is performed. Depending on the findings, we also carry out a duplex ultrasound examination at Derma Medical Clinic in Zurich to assess the superficial and deep venous system.

How does sclerotherapy for spider veins work?

In sclerotherapy, a special medication is injected into the affected vessels. This causes the vessel walls to stick together, and the treated vein is gradually metabolised by the body.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

Most patients find the treatment well tolerated and not painful. During the injection, a brief burning sensation or slight feeling of pressure may occur.

What is the difference between laser treatment and sclerotherapy for spider veins?

Both procedures pursue the same goal—closing the affected vessels—but they target different vessel sizes. The Nd:YAG laser is particularly suitable for the finest, superficial spider veins, while sclerotherapy (injection treatment) is more commonly used for larger, net-like veins and reticular veins. Which method—or a combination of both—is right for you is decided individually together with you, based on your skin type, findings, and your preferences.

How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments depends on the amount, size, and extent of the spider veins. Several sessions are often necessary.

When will you see the result?

The treated vessels do not disappear immediately. The body breaks them down gradually. Initial changes can be seen after a few weeks; complete regression may take several months.

Do I need to take anything into account before laser treatment?

Your skin should not be tanned at the treatment appointment. Direct sun exposure or solarium visits should be avoided starting two weeks before treatment.

Can spider veins come back after treatment?

Treated vessels usually disappear permanently. New spider veins can develop over time in other areas if the predisposition persists.

Do I need to wear compression stockings after treatment?

Depending on the method, wearing compression stockings for a few days may be useful. Unlike sclerotherapy, no compression stocking is required after laser treatment. Redness and mild swelling are normal and can be covered with sunscreen make-up if needed.

Will I be presentable after treatment?

You are fit to socialise again immediately after the session. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. Mild redness, small bruises, or temporary discolouration may occur, but in most cases they do not restrict everyday life.

Can I do sports after treatment?

Light activity such as walking is usually unproblematic. You should avoid intense exercise, sauna, hot baths, or strong heat exposure for 48 hours.

Can I go in the sun or sauna after laser treatment?

In the first 48 hours after treatment, you should avoid sports and sauna. For four weeks after treatment, direct sun exposure should be avoided; otherwise, consistent sun protection with SPF 50 is necessary, as treated areas may otherwise be prone to pigment changes.

Can men also get spider veins?

Spider veins occur more frequently in women, but they can also develop in men and can be treated just as effectively.

When should I have spider veins checked by a doctor?

An examination is advisable if spider veins are new, spread quickly, or if additional symptoms such as a feeling of heaviness, swelling, tightness, or visible varicose veins are present. Early assessment helps to identify possible changes in the venous system in good time.
