Spider Vein Treatment at a Glance
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are fine, reddish-bluish veins directly beneath the skin, usually on the legs. They develop when small superficial veins dilate and remain permanently visible. They often appear over the years, due to hormonal influences, or after pregnancy.
Although they are medically mostly harmless, many find them aesthetically bothersome. Many affected individuals try to cover their legs as much as possible, even on warm days.

Treatment
Depending on the findings, three proven methods are available:
Laser treatment: A special laser can close fine veins from the outside without injuring the skin.
Thermocoagulation: Targeted heat pulses are delivered via a fine probe on the skin to close the spider veins. No injection required.
Foam sclerotherapy: Slightly larger veins can be treated directly with a fine injection. A special solution is injected into the veins, causing them to collapse. The veins gradually fade.
All methods used aim to improve the appearance of affected veins. This often results in smoother and more even-looking skin.
Is the treatment painful?
Most people feel only a slight prick or brief sensation of warmth. If desired, the skin can be cooled beforehand or numbed with a cream.
How Quickly Will I See Results?
The first changes often appear after just a few weeks; with more pronounced findings, the final result may take months. Depending on the severity, multiple sessions may be necessary.
How Does the Assessment for Spider Vein Removal Work?
Initial consultation & assessment
During a personal consultation, our vascular specialist takes time to address your questions and expectations. He then examines your veins to safely rule out deep venous insufficiency. Based on this, we decide together which treatment method is best suited for you.
Treatment
The treatment can then take place if desired. It takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per leg – depending on the extent of the spider veins. Afterward, you can leave our clinic as normal.
Aftercare & Follow-Up
After treatment, you will wear compression stockings for a few days. This supports treatment success and helps prevent new veins from forming. The treated areas gradually fade.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Spider Veins
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are fine, reddish-bluish “veins” directly beneath the skin surface – usually on the legs. They are small dilations of the superficial veins. They are medically mostly harmless but are often perceived as cosmetically bothersome.
How do spider veins develop?
Causes include genetic predisposition, hormonal influences (e.g., pregnancy, birth control pills), prolonged standing or sitting, weak connective tissue, or venous dysfunction. They can also indicate developing venous insufficiency. A prior examination of the veins is therefore important to rule out possible deep venous insufficiency. This helps us prevent recurrence and plan the best possible therapy for you.
Which method is most effective against spider veins?
Depending on the findings, laser, sclerotherapy (injection), or thermocoagulation may be appropriate. We will determine which method or combination is best suited for you during a personal consultation.
Is spider vein removal painful?
The treatment is generally well tolerated. There may be brief burning or a sensation of warmth. Anesthesia is usually not necessary.
How many sessions are needed?
Often 1 to 2 sessions are sufficient. For more pronounced findings or to optimize results, additional treatments may be beneficial.
How long does healing take after laser or sclerotherapy?
The treated veins may be red or swollen for a few hours to days. You are usually presentable again quickly. Sports and sun exposure should be paused briefly – we will advise you individually.
Do spider veins grow back after treatment?
The treated veins disappear permanently, but new ones may develop over time. Exercise and compression stockings can help prevent this; these are available directly from us on-site.
When should spider veins be examined?
If swelling, pain, or skin changes also occur. This may indicate venous insufficiency. A venous ultrasound provides clarity, prevents recurrence, and helps plan the best possible therapy for you.
