What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are fine red or bluish veins just under the skin, usually on the legs. They form when small surface veins widen and stay visible. They often appear over time, due to hormones or after pregnancy.

Although they are mostly harmless from a medical point of view, many people find them cosmetically bothersome. Some try to cover their legs, even on warm days.

Who Can Benefit From Having Spider Veins Removed?

This treatment is ideal if you …

  • have fine, reddish or bluish veins on your legs that bother you
  • prefer to cover your legs in summer because of the appearance of your skin
  • have noticed more spider veins over the years or after pregnancy
  • want to know which method works best for your skin
  • value well-groomed, even-looking legs

How Are Fine Veins on the Legs Treated?

Depending on the findings, we offer three effective methods:

Laser treatment: A special laser fades the visible veins from the outside, without damaging the skin.

Injection: We treat slightly larger veins with a very fine injection. A solution is injected, causing the vein walls to stick together. The vein then gradually fades.

Foam: For larger areas or branching spider veins, we use the sclerosing solution in foam form. The foam spreads better and stays in place longer.

All these methods aim to seal the affected veins, make them fade gradually, and so the skin appears more even.

Is the treatment painful?

Most people feel only a slight sting or brief warmth. If desired, we can cool or numb the area beforehand.

How soon will I see results?

First changes are often visible after a few weeks. Depending on the extent, you may need more than one session.

What Happens During the Evaluation and Treatment?

Consultation & evaluation

We’ll discuss your concerns and expectations. Then, the dermatologist examines the areas and helps you decide which method suits you best.

Treatment

If you wish, the treatment takes place right after. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes per leg, depending on how many spider veins you have. You can leave the clinic as usual afterward.

Aftercare & recovery

After the procedure, you’ll wear compression stockings for a few days. This supports healing and helps prevent new spider veins. The treated veins fade gradually.

At Derma Medical Clinic, evaluation and treatment of vein concerns are managed by Dr. Benjamin Miller, a specialist in dermatology and phlebology.

He brings many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of vein conditions.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Spider Veins

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are fine, red or bluish veins under the surface of the skin – usually on the legs. They are small dilated surface veins. Medically they are usually harmless, but often seen as a cosmetic issue.

How do spider veins form?

Causes include genetics, hormone changes (e.g. pregnancy, the pill), long periods of sitting or standing, weak connective tissue or vein problems. They can also be an early sign of venous weakness.

Which method is most effective for spider veins?

Depending on the case, laser, sclerotherapy (injection) or foam sclerotherapy are options. We’ll discuss which method is best for you during your consultation.

Is spider vein treatment painful?

The treatment is usually well tolerated. You might feel slight burning or warmth for a short time. No anesthesia is usually needed.

How many sessions do I need?

Often 1 to 3 sessions are enough. If there are many spider veins or for better results, more treatments may help.

How long is the healing after laser or injection?

The skin may be red or swollen for a few days. Most people return to everyday life quickly. Avoid exercise and sun exposure briefly – we’ll guide you.

Do spider veins come back after treatment?

Treated veins are usually gone for good, but new ones can appear over time. Staying active, healthy eating and compression stockings can help prevent them.

When should I get spider veins checked?

If you also have swelling, pain or skin changes. These signs may indicate vein problems – an ultrasound can clarify.
